What is athletic therapy?

Certified athletic therapists are best known for their quick-thinking, on-field emergency care of athletes. The first to respond when someone gets hurt, they are experts at injury assessment and rehabilitation. It’s their education of on-site care and active rehabilitation skills that makes athletic therapists so effective in treating the musculoskeletal (muscles, bones, and joints) injuries of all Canadians, whether on the field or in the clinic. Depending on the injury the treatment varies but the objective doesn’t: an athletic therapist's goal is to help clients return to their usual activities, whether that means playing competitive sports or walking to the mailbox and back.

What happens during the first visit?

The athletic therapist will perform an assessment on the patient and establish a program for their dysfunctions. The assessment is extensive and includes evaluation of pain and movement patterns, muscle balance, joint function, reflexes, sensation and the patient's lifestyle and work. In addition, the athletic therapist examines relevant x-rays, laboratory tests, medical records and surgical notes.

The goal of the athletic therapist is to improve quality of life through maximizing a patient's movement and functional ability. They believe that the best way to achieve this is by encouraging independence and having patients participate as much as possible in the process of getting better. In this way, the patient's focus is on regaining confidence and returning to their usual way of life and sports activity.
