What Is Massage Therapy?
The practice of massage therapy involves the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of physical dysfunction and pain. A variety of techniques are used to attain these goals such as, the manipulation of soft tissues (muscles, tendons and ligaments), mobilization of joints, local and systemic circulation increase, lymphatic drainage, and stretching and strengthening programs. Although massage therapy can be extremely helpful in dealing with an isolated problem, it is most effective when used as part of an ongoing health maintenance program. Regular massage treatments help maintain overall good tissue health by dealing with existing problems and preventing new ones from forming. All of the massage therapists at HBT are RMT's, registered with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario.
What Is Included During Your First Visit?
A massage therapy treatment consists of an interview/assessment with the therapist who will review your health history, and conduct a physical assessment of any injury if necessary. A treatment plan will be explained, and once consent to the treatment is received from the client, the therapist will exit the treatment room while the client removes clothes and positions themselves, covered on the treatment table. (During most massage therapy treatments, most clothes are removed, however, the client is always encouraged to be comfortable in their choice of clothing removal, and treatment options are always available with clothing on.) During the treatment, the client is encouraged to discuss any reactions or feelings regarding the treatment. At the conclusion of treatment, the therapist will discuss any homecare they feel will benefit the client, and recommend a treatment plan for further visits.
